SONY VS Hackers Round 1
62
There has been a really big coverage in the media recently covering the ongoing battle of SONY against anyone who is involved in software modding of the PS3.
Why all this coverage? Why all the fuss?
Microsoft and Nintendo consoles got hacked almost from Day 1 and they did not make such a big deal about their security shortcomings. Why is SONY making such a big deal about it?
Only one reason comes to mind SONY sells PS3 consoles at a loss only making profit from games and accessories. By loosing game sales because of a hacked console they will not make the money the lost when they sold the PS3 console!
However has SONY brought this upon themselves? No huge effort was made to hack the PS3 until after SONY decided to remove the otherOS feature! Although SONY claims that most people did not use the feature or did not even know it existed, the people who did had a use for it. Do not forget that when people bought the PS3 it was advertised as also being a PC as well because of the otherOS feature. This is like Apple removing the ability from already sold MACs to run Windows although when users bought it was advertised that they could do this.
This action of SONY disappointed the most hacking able part of their PS3 community so they brought the PS3 Jailbreak upon themselves. Hackers have now managed to bring backup, hard disk drive play, homebrew and Linux to the PS3. Sony’s reaction was to shut these users out of PSN (online games) and also not giving them the ability to update without loosing the hacking features. Users having to remain at 3.41 firmware or lower to keep the hacks lost 3D movies support which arrived a few weeks after the hack at firmware 3.50.
My money is with the hackers on winning this war but regardless which side you are on the war has just begun...

There's a difference between "loose" and "lose".
Who gives a living flip about OtherOS =.=
Really now people, most people didn't even know or even need that extra thing especially when most households owning a ps3 probably has a fairly decent PC.
OtherOS fight is just a poor excuse.
It seems a majority of people are missing a few facts. First of all, Sony is making money on consoles now, and has been for more then a year, a little research never hurt anyone ;). But, the reason that Sony wants to prevent this isn't to take away OtherOS, they don't want you "stealing" games by pirating. You could homebrew all you wanted, and frankly, they wouldn't give a fuck, it's just the people that are pirating games, ruin it for the rest of us with honest intentions. Come on people, stop pirating, $60 isn't much, get your shit together, and you can have OtherOS back eventually.
Also, OtherOS is a poor excuse for a fight, I agree with you Shadow. Most people do have Decent PCs, at the same time, the fact that it was an advertised feature at launch, and that Sony removed it, is immoral on their part, but they still should be able to protect their Copyrighted materials.
If you steal from a store they won't let you do it, Sony is that store, Piracy, is making Sony have to take action.
it still surprises how misinformed all these people who write articles about this subject really are
let's see if you get this through your thick skull: the jailbreak won't ever work with games that were released after it came out, original games come with the firmware update on the disk and you can't run them until you update, also all new PS3s sold come with the 3.42 firmware already installed
so the jailbreak works on consoles made before september and with games released before the hack came out
that makes the jailbreak very very limited, because the people who would be interested in it, mainly hardcore gamers are no interested in having a harddrive filled with back ups of games they already played
the damege that it can cause should be very similar to what the JTAG exploit did for xbox live, in other words almost nothing
I'm pretty sure the author of this article has no idea what JTAG is, but if there's a war the jailbreak lost it before the USB dongle were shipped
"No huge effort was made to hack the PS3 until after SONY decided to remove the otherOS feature!"... So I assume you never heard about GeoHotz then...
If the other OS was left, within a few weeks(GeoHotz was pretty far with his research) anyone could have had a hacked system just by installing Linux and running a piece of software... Now it is more difficult having to either buy a suitable USB dongle and/or reprogramming it for the PSPGroove.
"No huge effort was made to hack the PS3 until after SONY decided to remove the otherOS feature!"
you really have no idea what the hell you're talking about, don't you? hundreds of hackers tried for years to hack the PS3 with no success, all different kinds of hacks were tried and failed
This author is stupid. The PS3 was bound to get hacked. OtherOS wasn't the SOUL reason hackers "started to take action". If hackers really got mad because OtherOS was removed, it was because they no longer had a system with a possible huge hole in security. What ignorance! It's only coincidence that PS3 was hacked after OtherOS was removed.
And BTW, people who use the term "Jailbreak" with the PS3 - just stop. Don't compare an overpriced hand-held to a quality machine!
First of all Sony has not made a profit off of the PS3 hardware for a year, Durp.

Both articles are from this Summer, not last year.
Second of all hackers will find a way around these quick fixes implemented by Sony.
The only thing I do agree on is piracy affects all of us and Sony needs to try and at least slow it down. They won;t stop it though.
We are now able to update our PS3 games without being forced to update. It is only a matter of time before we are able to update our PS3's to get the 3D movies support without loosing the jailbreak

Justice needs to be served!
Sony will lose this case!
I don't care what happens to those ps3 hacking sites, but we want our OtherOS back.
It's just so FARKING retarded and stupid man!
No ONE hacked the ps3 with the OtherOS and yet Sony removed it! In the end hackers did hack the ps3 with other devices and even with the controller, however hackers still haven't hacked the ps3 with OtherOS!
